Ahlan World’s students usually come to the region with the goal of not only learning Arabic, but also experiencing as much of the Middle East and its cultures as possible. Ahlan therefore encourages its students to take advantage of their time with us to get out of the city, explore, and hopefully practice Arabic along the way! We offer many of our own trips for students but our staff will also be happy to help students plan their own trips to the amazing sites found across the Arab world.
In Jordan, students can easily escape the city to historical sites of Roman, early Arab and early Islamic origins, such as the ruins in Jerash, desert castles, and the famous lost city of Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage site unlike any other. Another student favorite is the breathtaking landscape of Wadi Rum, known as “Valley of the Moon,” where you can camp out under the stars with local Bedouin guides. Other popular destinations include the Dead Sea, which is the lowest place on Earth, and the port of Aqaba, where you can scuba dive and relax on pristine beaches along the Red Sea.
Egypt is similarly packed with exciting sites to visit throughout the country. Sail along the Nile through ancient cities such as Aswan and Luxor, known as the world’s largest open-air museum, or head north to the beautiful port of Alexandria and popular beach towns like Sharm el Sheikh and Dahab in the Sinai. Students can also explore vast wadis and deserts, oases and historic towns for some well-deserved relaxation after the chaos of Cairo.
A bit farther west but no less exciting, Morocco is bustling with amazing sites to see, such as the historic landmarks and markets in the four imperial cities: Fez, Meknes, Marrakesh and Rabat; the world-famous blue city of Chefchouen and remote villages out in the Sahara, like Merzouga.
If you’re still not convinced to come, Palestine, Israel, and Lebanon are just a few more favorites, with each offering countless additional opportunities to experience this amazing region!
No matter where you decide to go, Ahlan will be there to support you and we’ll certainly be eager to hear about all of your adventures when you return!
